The threat about to arrive from outer space. Not aliens, alas. Nor a shower of killer asteroids,
Solar flares. Two sunspots, each about 10 times the size of Earth, have appeared on the sun's surface since Sunday.

The Electrokinetic Microchannel Battery
First discovery of its kind since 1839: cheap, clean electricity from water
HOW IT WORKS
When any liquid, such as water, comes in contact with a solid, such as glass, a tiny layer just a few millionths of a metre thick is formed at the interface of the glass and water. Called the electric double layer (EDL), this layer carries a small electrical charge.
By pushing the water through tiny tubes or channels in the glass about the same thickness as the electric double layer, an electrical current is produced and hence a voltage difference across the ends of the channels.
When an external circuit is added by placing electrodes at the ends of the channels, electrical energy is produced as current flows between the electrodes. The source of that energy is the work done to push the water through the channels.
What continues to strike Larry Kostiuk is the simplicity of their invention.
Using a syringe, they pressed water through their "filter," a two-centimetre glass disc with 450,000 holes in it -- something commonly found in labs, he said. The holes act as the microchannels where the charge is created.
They attached metal electrodes at either end of their device and connected them using a wire to create a pathway for the current -- and they had electricity.
"Embarrassingly, that's it," he said.

In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem.
One day an acquaintance met the great philosopher and said, "Socrates, do you know what I just heard about your friend?"
"Hold on a minute," Socrates replied. "Before telling me anything I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test."
"Triple filter?"
"That's right," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you're going to say." "The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"
"No," the man said, "actually just heard about it and..."
"All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?"
"No, on the contrary..."
"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, but you're not certain it's true. You may still pass the test though, because there's one filter left, the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?"
"No, not really."
"Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?"
This is why Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.
It also explains why he never found out his best friend was banging his wife...
