It is estimated that well over 9 million Americans take antidepressants.
You can't turn on the TV without being deluged with ads for various "happy pills" and be told which claims the fewer "sexual side effects".
Hell... I'd be extremely depressed after reading all the other possible side effects listed on each bottle.
The irony is that a large percentage of those gleefully gulping down these pills are the very same ones who will point fingers of shame at those who indulge in "non" prescription drugs or smoke an occasional joint.. to achieve the very same "happy" results. - Dr Jack

Dr. Jack doesn't have a clue. Anti-depressants don't make you 'happy' and they don't help you hide from an unpleasant world.
They help your brain chemistry get normal and bring you back to reality.
When some some of the brain's neurotransmitters don't fire correctly, the resulting symptoms are the syndrome called "depression." Anti-depressants help return your brain chemistry to sort-of-normal, thus enabling neurotransmitters to fire correctly. When that happens, the symptoms ease, and the depressed person seems less stressed. Some might call that "happy". I call it a relief.
There are many potential causes of malfunctioning neurotransmitters - and the resulting "depression".
There is a genetic component.
There are physical components such as head injury, stroke, etc.
There are emotional components.
Depression is a no-fault disease. It doesn't involve moral lapses or poor lifestyle choices. It doesn't care about its victims:
- rich or poor
- famous or obscure
- all races, colors, creeds
No group is spared.
Usual therapy is a combination of counseling and medication. Sometimes the symptoms abate, sometimes not. Sometimes the symptoms come back, sometimes not.
Trust me, no one gleefully gulps down anti-depressants. There is no "buzz" whatsoever, and all anti-depressants have some kind of side effects - sexual or other. Unlike recreational chemicals, anti-depressants help get one into reality.
As for others, I care not how they mess with their brain chemistry. If they can't handle reality, perhaps they ought to confront their own demons, instead of fogging or drowning their brains. But as long as their choice of hiding doesn't hurt me (e.g., drunk driving), I don't care.
As for "to achieve the very same 'happy' results"... Recreational chemicals shield one from reality for a while. Anti-depressants let one peek at reality; when you've spent a few days balled up in a corner, sucking your thumb and contemplating suicide - then that peek at any reality is a delight.
The only result I get is get one more day when I probably won't pull across the center line in front of an oncoming concrete truck, or use a bullet to splatter my brains on some wall in the house, or go out to the truck and snort a lethal dose of Carbon Monoxide.
Real happy, huh?
Seek help.
I'm getting help. Thanks for thinking of me.
I'm not ready to open my own "Blog" so gotta do an anonymous! But! I think what entertains me about this class,(and most classes of these pharmiceuticals,) is that if you read your "P.D.R" it will state that the how and why these things work is "Unknown"! As far as "Reality" is concerned, well that's just pretty subjective.. There is of course,a school of thought that believes that a person who doesn't seek to change their point of view of "Reality" is in a dead-end point in human evolution! Frankly, I enjoy "smoking" Mother Nature! If that is a problem for you, well that's your personal problem, and not really Mine! Soooo! Do what you need to do to get through this life! Peace!!!
