LeRoy Grannis is OK

Dear SANO Surfers, LeRoy Grannis is OK and living near his son John and is doing better than most people who were born in 1917. In December he lost his beloved wive of well over 60 years, Katie and recently moved from the 2-room Assisted Living apartment he shared with her.

He is alert, aware and articulate. He's reading the book about Miki Dora, sees his family almost every day, visits with or goes to lunch with old friends as often as possible. He asks about the surf every time I see him. At nearly 92 he does not walk too far but does 'fred-flintstones' his wheelchair pretty well. He still has that wry smile and twinkle in his eye. He's a much younger man inside!

Like most in their 90s he does have some health issues but they are not painful ones. His condition and mobility disqualify him for solo Assistant Living so he's in a center selected by his son with a higher level of care. He can no longer run his photo business and his collection is under the care and protection of a Trustee selected by attorneys for the family.

His photo business is not operating but he does have other resourcees. The implication that he is destitute or has been ripped off is completely incorrect. The money he saved for his old age and the money earned by his photo business was spent on keeping him and Katie healthy and together for as long as possible. No funds are missing, they are being spent on his old age as intended and are accounted for by Trustees, lawyers, family and the San Diego Superior court.

There is an unfortunate fight in the family over the creation of the Trust and control of his assets. The alarm and accusations spread here and elsewhere are untrue and unfortunate and disrespectful to Granny and his contributions to surfing and surf culture. Stop it!

LeRoy Grannis lives! We must celebrate the man and his work. Please send Granny Aloha in any way that you can. Help generate happiness for this still-wonderful man.

Friend and Admirer of LeRoy Grannis
