Marijuana use increases brain size, and causes hysteria in non-users
Dean Ornish shares new research that shows how adopting healthy lifestyle habits can affect a person at a genetic level. For instance, he says, when you live healthier, eat better, exercise, and love more, your brain cells actually increase.
Why You Should Watch
Dr. Dean Ornish wants you to live longer, and have more fun while you’re at it. He's one of the leading voices in the medical community promoting a balanced, holistic approach to health, and proving that it works. The author of Eat More, Weigh Less and several other best-selling books, Ornish is best known for his lifestyle-based approach to fighting heart disease.
His research at the Preventive Medicine Research Institute (the nonprofit he founded) clinically demonstrated that cardiovascular illnesses -- and, most recently prostate cancer -- can be treated and even reversed through diet and exercise. These findings (once thought to be physiologically implausible) have been widely chronicled in the US media, including Newsweek, for which Ornish writes a column. The fifty-something physician, who's received many honors and awards, was chosen by LIFE Magazine as one of the most influential members of his generation. Among his many pursuits, Ornish is now working with food corporations to help stop America's obesity pandemic from spreading around the globe.
"Instead of trying to motivate [patients] with the 'fear of dying,' Ornish reframes the issue. He inspires a new vision of the 'joy of living' -- convincing them they can feel better, not just live longer."

The California Coastal Commission voted at 11:18 pm Wednesday night to deny a coastal permit to the Transportation Corridor Agencies. It will now be much more difficult for the TCA to construct the Foothill-South (241) toll road extension.
The vote was 8-2 in favor of denying certification. More to follow!
VOTES BY COMMISSIONER:
Blank – NO Burke – YES Clark – NO Kram – YES Neely – NO Reilly – NO Shallenberger – NO Wan – NO Kruer – NO (some voters were inaudible due to cheering)
Some Coastal Commissioners had very tough questions and very tough language for the TCA. Here are my favorite excerpts:
Commissioner SARA WAN, herself a scientist, was "appalled" at what she called the TCA's "false science". She even suggested the TCA's management plan for the mouse was "not a management plan at all except perhaps as a plan to drive the Pacific pocket mouse into extinction."
Commissioner MIKE REILLY cited the "limited value" of the TCA's $100 Million offer, and declared that "there is no legal way for us to concur with certification of this project."
The real kicker was Commissioner STEVE BLANK, who grilled the hell out of new TCA CEO Tom Margro. Citing TCA's claims that the 241 would serve as an evacuation route in a nuclear disaster,
BLANK said, "I was led to understand [San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station's] operating license was contingent upon having an approved evacuation plan. Has the government declared their plan inadequate?"
MARGRO: No - but can I elaborate?
BLANK: No, thank you, you've answered the question.
Margo then cited the TCA's threat that it could cost $70 Million to renew the lease for the state park.
BLANK: "Has the Navy ever denied the renewal of a lease of a state park?"
MARGRO: "I can't answer that question."
BLANK: "I believe the answer is no."
Burke went on to cite law discussed in this blog (State Park Scare Tactics) which would potentially allow for the lease to be renewed at less than $70 Million .
BLANK: "Doesn’t this mean there is a clear path for the lease to be renewed at a price other than $70 Million dollars?"
MARGRO: "It's possible."
BLANK: “Since Navy didn’t ask for $70 million dollars … Is it possible that they might ask for a dollar in 2021?”
MARGRO: "If they make findings."
BLANK: "So really at best it's a $30 Million dollar proposal"
MARGRO: "I would say it is a $100 million dollar proposal – for state parks."
BLANK: "Or a $30 Million dollar proposal?"
MARGRO: "Or $30 million – which still benefits state parks."
BLANK: "I have another question - Is there a price tag for a state park?
It seems that lately I have had to write way too many columns about somebody passing away. So many great surfers and cool dudes have been doing that lately that it has been scary.
We just lost the great Leslie "Birdman" Williams, who was once called "the best there is at Malibu" by Mickey Dora himself. And also legendary big wave rider Tommy Lee, who became famous for his horrible cannonball wipeout at Waimea Bay back in the early 1960s.
This morning my neighbor, the Iguana, and I had to check the obits just to make sure we were still here.
Thankfully, we are. I have one foot on the banana peel and he has both, but we are still standin'.
And then I am going through today's e-mail and one pops up with the subject "Mickey Muñoz." My heart stops. "Oh nooooooo, not Mickey too?" I am thinking.
But, happily, it wasn't bad news. In fact it was great news. Mickey, aka the "Mongoose," is turning 70 years old and is having a birthday party at Doheny on Friday, 8/24 to celebrate!!! .
In 1991, Greg Noll brought 24 surfing greats to the Central American country of Costa Rica for a week of surf and camaraderie. This first "Surf Legends Classic" started what was to become an annual event that would reunite old friends at different surf spots around the world. The first two were held in Costa Rica. The third at Makaha, and the fourth in Bali. A five year hiatus ended with the 1999 Classic being held in conjunction with the surf festival in Noosa Heads, Australia... .
Among the “rights” being claimed by the hundreds of illegal aliens thronging the streets of some of the largest cities in the U.S. is that of receiving Social Security.
It is logical that the last “right” should be Social Security. From cradle to grave the American citizen taxpayer is subsidizing the illegal immigration influx.
When an illegal pregnant woman comes into a hospital, she must be given care as she delivers her baby. That baby then automatically becomes a citizen. These babies are called “anchor babies” because they enable other members of the family to access welfare benefits... .
Somewhat disconcerting for US tax paying citizens to find out that about to become law is an agreement signed on June 29, 2004, between the U.S. Commissioner of Social Security and the director general of the Mexican Social Security Institute that allows illegal aliens to collect Social Security benefits if they have as little as 18 months of employment history. While US citizens must show 10 years, or 40 quarters of job history, to collect benefits...
